Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is headed to Hollywood. The Nithilan Saminathan-directed thriller, which made a strong impact upon its 2024 release, has officially been picked up for an English-language adaptation. The remake announcement comes amid speculation that Matthew McConaughey could take on the role originally played by Sethupathi, though his casting is yet to be confirmed.

The remake plans were officially announced on Wednesday, September 16, when the producers of Maharaja took to social media to confirm that the acclaimed Tamil thriller is being adapted for Hollywood. The post read, “A HISTORIC MILESTONE! #Maharaja becomes the first Tamil film to be made in Hollywood by a major studio.”
Soon after the announcement was shared, fans were seen expressing their excitement. One fan wrote, “Proud moment of entire team especially director @dir_nithilan Sir and actor @actorvijaysethupathi proud kollywood forever.” Another fan wrote, “This is what happens when the content speaks loud.” A third fan wrote, “Only because of director , this milestone happens.” Others were seen dropping red hearts and fire emojis.
While the Hollywood adaptation has been confirmed, the lead casting remains under wraps. Matthew McConaughey’s name has been circulating on social media, with several reports claiming that the Oscar-winning actor could headline the remake. However, producer Sudhan Sundaram told TOI that an A-list actor is being considered and that the project is expected to begin filming next year. On being asked specifically about McConaughey, Sundaram indicated that he could be among the names being discussed, but said the agency handling the casting would be in a position to confirm it.
Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi‘s Maharaja also starred Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam, Mamta Mohandas and others. Released in June 2024, Maharaja initially presents itself as an unusual police complaint involving a missing dustbin called Lakshmi. As the investigation unfolds, however, the seemingly trivial case takes a much darker turn, with the police discovering that the father’s real reason for approaching them is far more serious than a stolen household item.
